How to Host an Event

Big, small, unique, sporty..the ideas are endless. Whether you are repeating a successful yearly event, thinking about starting up a small fundraiser or wanting to include the entire community in a big bash - it all starts with you! 

Here are just a few ideas that will help you host a great event:

1. Who will help you plan the event?

Get the girls and start planning! Think of all those great ideas that could help you reach your goal, but remember one important thing: KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid!) Planning can be challenging so make sure you let your peeps express their talents by helping with the decorations, music, advertising, etc.

2. What are you fundraising for?

Is there a girl issue that is especially important to you or your community? Have you been inspired by a girl that you’ve seen on TV or been touched by her story? Whether the funds raised are for a one-time donation or to Sponsor a Girl, Plan makes it easy to select the right choice for you.

3. Decide what your event will be.

Will you plan a talent show, a loonie or toonie drive, a bake sale? Your event is limited only by your imagination. Check out this list of event ideas to get your creativity flowing.

4. Make sure you have everything covered off.

You may need the permission of an adult to reserve a location for your event, help you collect money or for other tasks associated with events. Chat with your parents and remember Plan Canada is also here to help you – we can send you posters, brochures and other materials to make your event a success.

5. Advertise your event!

Let your school or community know what you are doing. Here are some ways to get people excited about your event: 

  • Setup your own fundraising webpage. You can now create your own webpage and send invitations to your event to everyone you know! 

  • Use posters, leaflets or flyers to publicize your event. Please contact fundraising@plancanada.ca for promotional materials and for approval on your own designs. 

  • Write an article for your school or local community newspaper about your fundraiser and its results to date. And be sure to send us a copy!

6. After the event…

  • Collect the funds:
    We ask that all funds be forwarded to Plan Canada, Community Events at 95 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto, Ontario, M4V 3B9. Please do not send cash and use one of the pledge sheets provided. All donations over $25 will receive a tax receipt.   

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you:
    Here's the most important part: please acknowledge everyone who participated in or supported your activity and let them know how much you appreciate their help. They would also be proud to hear how much money was raised!
